Mt. Fuji is not just the highest mountain in Japan, but something more spiritual, linked to the identity of the Japanese. One thing I like about where I live is that I can see it from the train when I go to work in the morning. Mt. Fuji is near Tokyo, but when you are "in" Tokyo, you haredly ever see it because, first of all, it's in fact miles away, and also the sky is covered up with hundreds of tall buildings, and furthermore the air is dusty. Even from my commuter train, it is only in wint.
